What does collaboration mean to you, and what does it entail?

To make certain forms of artwork, it means finding all the components necessary to complete the vision.  Sometimes the vision is beyond the technical skill and capacity of the artist at the onset.  Therefore, the artist must locate sites devoted to specialized focus in to producing certain facilities that have and sometimes for the duration of the piece.

What circumstances lead creative professionals to undertake collaborative projects?

When the artist need a mature technical situation to complete the art work

What are the essential tools that enable collaborative teams to flourish?

In my case it is the need to have available the use of welding and slump molding glass in a kiln facilities

How do you capture collaborative work processes?

By asking the right person and paying for space and time and a technician at each site.

I could not provide my own equipment for these very technical and rather dangerous tools. Have to really respect how one uses these machines. The right environment is crucial to ensure that everyone around you is safe while you try to create. Using the torches and the high heated equipment

-the glass workshop for use of kiln and technician to advise temperature and duration

-the welding workshop for use of equipment in a safe environment and technician instruction and advice on metals

KILN at URBAN GLASS for fusing glass on to welded sculpture    +        WELDING shop at Pratt Institute

What are common obstacles you face and how do you address them?

The cost for the use of the technical workshops are expensive and must be budgeted around available funds

What are some noteworthy collaborative projects you have taken on? Who were your collaborators?

My creative endeavors contingent on professional collaborative efforts to complete are glass fused onto welded sculptures.

Collaborators have been the Pratt Institute welding shop and the NY Experimental Glass Workshop / Urban Glass

Mary Rieser Heintjes

LinkedIn profile: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/mary-rieser-heintjes/59/3a3/8

  • 1979 PRATT BFA AND
  • 1985 Pratt MFA Fine Arts alum
  • Artwork created in stained glass, painting and photography
  • Discovered digital photography in the 90’s and moved away from darkroom processing
  • Emphasis that her work is ‘what you see is what you get’ with no Photoshop interventions

Working digitally was more of a survival issue for Mary.  She transitioned from traditional fine art photography out of need, affordability and she has historically taught herself new technology to enhance both her creative and personal life.

Maria Uroos

LinkedIn profile: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/maria-uroos/11/408/29a

  • 2005 Pratt undergraduate Communications Design alum – graphic design
  • Work experience in print and digital design
  • Interest in interactive/exhibition/experiential design
  • Design practice includes painting, illustration, hand written typography and new media

“My work is about translation, and interpreting expressions.  It investigates the duality of love and wisdom: mind vs. heart.  It offers a narration from two perspectives; our instinctive, emotional reaction as well as the response shaped by our surroundings.  Based in various environments; iconography, symbolism and visual social semiotic tools play a major role in shaping the content of my narratives.  My experiences in the two-dimensional world of print and digital media have led me to explore 3D modeling and rendering effects.”

Soum Ghosh

  • 2011 Pratt undergraduate Communications Design alum
  • Background in textile deseing and visual communications
  • Has worked in the Pratt Alumni Relations and Publications offices, which he considers the best jobs he has ever had – he loved them!

“I work as a back-end Java developer/server side programmer/ process architect for a global fashion retail company.  My projects range from architecting implementation process for web and mobile e-commerce based applications to designing and developing user flow for and API usage platform.  I have a huge advantage when it comes to communicating complex technical ideas to stake holders.  I find it very easy to visually illustrate process and to put things in their context.”

Hannah Mishin

  • Pratt undergraduate in Painting and History of Art & Design alum
  • Practicing artist in NYC for 10 years; the past three years she transitioned from painting and work in paper to a focus on new technology
  • About to complete a MPS at NYU Tisch in Interactive Telecommunications; emerging technologies

“I have been coding for physical objects (physical computing), coding for digital fabrication techniques and using electronic components to create projects.  I am interested in these things because I think they are more successful at engaging, in provocative ways, the public.”

Gretel Schwartzott

LinkedIn profile: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/gretel-schwartzott/26/270/6b9

  • 2002 Pratt Masters in Industrial Design alum
  • Studied sculpture (BFA) and began freelancing as an architectural model-maker

“Digitizing work is a great way to create objects that can be quickly scaled and remade infinitely off one file.  It speeds up production if a project requires more than one product in more than one scale.  I also utilize it as a tool- often bringing 2D files into 3D, or 3D files to 3D reality. I love creating puzzles and kits to recreate actual architecture, topography or products... creating objects, furniture, books, toys, jewelry....”

Olga Andreyeva

  • Current Pratt student- BFA in Communications Design

     Panel Topics of Interest

  • Adapting to technology
  • Exploring and surviving in the 2D & 3D world
  • Old world vs. new world and what is next
  • Life and learning transitions that lead the artists to explore technologies that impact their visual communications
  • How technology is being utilized in design
  • How can we use it to create more sustainable lifestyles- Real/Virtual scenarios
  • How can it create a more productive work environment
  • Will it add to the work load or diminish it?
  • How does it/can it push boundaries in Design and Fabrication
  • Challenges that are also created by technology
